Paediatric dentistry began its development in Bulgaria more than 60 years ago. In 1954, one of the first Departments of Pаediatric Dentistry in Europe was founded by Prof. Dinko Stranski at the Faculty of Dentistry-Sofia, which was established in 1950. This fact changed education, directing it towards the treatment and prevention of oral diseases in childhood.

Dentists were being taught to treat children with all their specificities. Later, teaching was expanded with the introduction of a new independent discipline – “Prevention of Oral Diseases”, which introduces all modern methods and means for the prevention of caries and periodontal diseases

A specialty in “pаediatric dentistry” was established and, through a three-year specialization, a contingent of specialists has been provided throughout the country to practice the appropriate prevention and treatment of oral diseases in childhood. The Scientific Society of Pаediatric Dentistry includes lecturers from the Faculties of Dental Medicine in Sofia and Plovdiv, and also attracts specialists from all over the country. With the onset of changes after 1989, the activity of this society gradually declined, but the need to unite the specialists responsible for the oral health of children in Bulgaria did not decrease

At the same time, knowledge about oral diseases is growing. This is changing both the teaching in the Departments of Pаediatric Dentistry at the dental faculties in Bulgaria, and the volume and nature of specialization in the specialty. The basic concepts of the essence of the main oral diseases are changing. The understanding of their prevention and treatment is changing. This necessitated the creation of a new society of specialists in the field, where the methods and concepts imposed for years can be discussed and changed, and the methods of treatment and prevention can be created and standardized.

In 2011, specialists from the three existing Faculties of Dental Medicine in Sofia, Plovdiv and Varna founded the “National Association of Dentists”.

The establishment of the Bulgarian Association of Pаediatric Dentistry took place at a conference in Sofia. A decision was made to create consensus on etiology, pathogenesis, clinical features, diagnostics, prevention, and treatment of the main oral diseases. A scientific program was introduced to present the latest scientific achievements of the association members. It was decided to hold such conferences annually, as well as to initiate and conduct campaigns for the promotion of oral health in childhood. The establishment culminates in the holding of the first scientific conference with reports and a poster session, in which leading and young representatives from the Dental Faculties from Sofia and Plovdiv participate.

A conference of the Bulgarian Association of Pаediatric Dentistry was held in Hisarya from October 5-8, 2012. The first two consensuses developed by Prof. M. Peneva, MD, on the topics of “Modern diagnostics and treatment of caries of permanent children’s teeth” and “Clinical diagnostics and treatment of pulpitis of primary teeth” were presented, discussed, and adopted there. A scientific session with reports and posters was also held.

At a conference in Hanioti, Greece, on October 4-5, 2013, two consensuses were presented, discussed, and adopted. One, developed by Prof. M. Peneva on the topic of “Clinic and treatment of pulpitis and periodontitis of permanent children’s teeth”, and the other developed by Prof. M. Peneva, Prof. M. Rashkova, Prof. R. Kabakchieva on the topic of “Clinic and treatment of caries of primary teeth”. Once again, reports and posters of the latest achievements of the association’s members were presented.

The annual conference in 2014 is dedicated to the celebration of “60 years of the Department of Pаediatric Dentistry”. A celebration is held in the first auditorium of the Faculty of Paediatric Dentistry – Sofia, attended by all members of the association, all former and current members of the department, guests and specialists from the country. Everything done so far was reported, tribute was paid to the creators, and then the latest developments were presented again in a scientific session.The same year, a consensus developed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ani Belcheva, MD, on the topic of “Injuries to Primary and Permanent Children’s Teeth,” was adopted at a conference in Kavala, Greece.

At a conference on September 19-20, 2015, in Greece, the consensus developed by Prof. Dr. Maya Rashkova, MD, on the topic “Periodontal Diseases in Children and Adolescents” was adopted. The scientific session showcased the new developments of the association’s members.In 2016, the annual conference was held in Porto-Caras, Greece on September 22 and 23. The consensus developed by Prof. Dr. Maya Rashkova, MD, on the topic of “Diseases of the Oral Mucosa in Childhood” was presented there. This consensus covers all major areas of the clinic and treatment of oral diseases. This consensus covers all major areas of oral health care and treatment. It is available for undergraduate and postgraduate training, as well as for practicing dentists.
In 2018, a consensus was adopted at the annual conference on the topic “Conducting conservative and/or surgical dental treatment of children under sedation or general anesthesia”, developed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pavel Stanimirov, MD – Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Medical University – Sofia and Clinic of Maxillofacial Surgery, University Hospital “Alexandrovska”, Prof. Dr. Rositsa Kabakchieva, MD – Department of Paediatric Dentistry, Faculty of Dentistry, Medical University – Sofia, Prof. Dr. Radomir Ugrinov, MD, MD – Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Faculty of Dentistry, Medical University – Sofia and Head of the Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic, University Hospital “Alexandrovska”, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Margarita Atanasova, MD – Specialist in Anesthesiology and intensive care in the II NAIL at the KAIL at the University Hospital “Aleksandrovska”, Prof. Dr. Nadezhda Gavrilova, MD – specialist in anesthesiology and intensive care and emergency medicine, head of the clinic for paediatric anesthesiology and resuscitation at the University Hospital “N.I. Pirogov”. Over the period of three years (2015-2018), campaigns to promote oral health were held twice a year under the slogan “Everything from us for your healthy teeth, children”. Children and parents from the city of Sofia are invited to them. Similar campaigns are also held in the city of Plovdiv, under the leadership of the members of the association from Plovdiv. Since 2015, the National Association of Pаediatric Dentistry has been accepted as an equal member of the International Association of Pаediatric Dentistry. At a conference in 2023 in Kardzhali, consensuses were adopted on the topics of “Treatment of caries of primary and permanent children’s teeth” and “Treatment of pulpitis of primary and permanent children’s teeth”. At a conference in Lukovit in 2024, a consensus on the topic of “Prevention of oral diseases in dentistry” was presented, discussed and adopted.
